Why condensation is the real test

Most wine label failures aren't caused by a single soaking. They're caused by cycling: cold and wet, then warm and dry, then cold again. Each cycle works moisture a little further under the edge, which is how a paper label ends up curling by the time the bottle reaches the table.

Neither of our stocks is paper, so neither absorbs water the way paper does.

Soft Touch BOPP — supplied on rolls

BOPP is a polypropylene film, finished here with a soft touch laminate. Soft touch is worth feeling to understand: it's a matte lamination with a velvety, almost suede-like surface, and it kills glare so colours read deep and sophisticated rather than shiny.

It's also a laminate, which means it seals the printed surface against moisture, scuffing and handling. That combination — premium hand-feel plus a sealed print — is why it's the material for bottles that genuinely get chilled, iced, gripped with wet hands and moved in and out of a fridge.

Rolls are the practical format once you're labelling a real production run, because they feed in order, one at a time, rather than being picked off a sheet on a bottling morning.

Textured Vinyl — supplied on sheets

Textured vinyl has a canvas-like surface — a fine woven texture you can feel under your thumb, closer to artist's canvas or linen than to a printed film. It's the finish people mean when they say a bottle feels handmade rather than manufactured, and it's what separates a boutique bottle from a mass-produced one on a shelf.

Sheets suit small runs and hand application, and they're easier to store between batches.

Which should you choose?

• Soft Touch BOPP — for bottles that get chilled, served, handled, or produced in volume. Velvety matte finish with the print sealed under laminate.
• Textured Vinyl — for gifts, weddings, small-batch runs and shelf presence. Canvas texture, for when the feel of the bottle is part of the product.

Semi-permanent adhesive

Both materials use a semi-permanent adhesive. It holds firmly through handling and chilling, but it's designed to come away from glass rather than bond to it forever — which matters if you reuse bottles, return them, or want a label off a keepsake bottle later.

What's the difference between Soft Touch BOPP and Textured Vinyl?

Soft Touch BOPP is a polypropylene film with a velvety matte laminate sealing the print, supplied on rolls. Textured Vinyl has a canvas-like woven surface, supplied on sheets. Both are premium; the choice is between a sealed, velvet-smooth finish and a tactile canvas one.

What does soft touch feel like?

Velvety and slightly warm, closer to suede than to paper or plastic. It's the finish used on premium book covers and packaging, and it's immediately noticeable when someone picks the bottle up.

Are wine labels waterproof?

Neither material is paper, so neither swells, pulps or curls the way a paper label does when it gets wet. Soft Touch BOPP goes further again: the laminate seals the printed surface itself, which is what makes it the pick for condensation, ice and wet hands.

Are they wine-proof?

No, and that's a real distinction worth knowing. Waterproof means the label survives water. Wine is a different thing: it's acidic, pigmented, and contains alcohol, which acts as a solvent. Spilled wine left sitting on a label can mark it. Wipe a spill rather than leaving it and you're fine — but we'd rather tell you up front than have you find out on a finished bottle.

Which one should I use for bottles served in an ice bucket?

Soft Touch BOPP. That's exactly the job the laminate is doing.

Can I remove the label afterwards?

Generally yes — the adhesive is semi-permanent and designed to release from glass. Warming the label gently first makes removal easier and cleaner.

What size fits a standard 750ml bottle?

It depends on the bottle — Bordeaux, Burgundy and Hock bottles all have different straight sections. Send us your dimensions, or tell us which bottle you're using, and we'll confirm the fit on your free proof rather than guessing from a template.

Can I order labels for a single special bottle?

Yes. There's no minimum order quantity, so a one-off bottle for a wedding or a gift is a normal order for us.

Do I need specific information on a wine label?

If you're selling commercially rather than gifting, Canadian labelling regulations apply — covering things like alcohol content, net volume and allergen declarations. Check the current requirements before you finalise your design. We print what you supply.
